I tried to be poetic to a man who deals in numbers He said “Boy, don’t be pathetic. Just tell me how it is” I tried to trim my tale, that one that I’d been spinning But to no avail I couldn’t help but make a scene I rambled on for years, talking long into the night I was in and out of tears, the man rolled his eyes When I finally took a breath he interjected with this pill... Said “Boy, I deal in death and now it’s you I’d like to kill. I’m the one who gives and takes, the gatekeeper of life And I fear that must say, you’ve been waisting your time With your skeptic views of the life you’ve been given Don’t speak to me again until you’ve read what’s been written.” So I took him at his word and I crawled my way home My tail between my legs and a goal to be transformed I started boning up, reading Campbell’s “Thousand Faces” And folded every corner of Jung’s learned pages I dined with theologians and licked their plates clean Pontificating daily over smokes and caffeine I found peace of mind then lost it so quickly In hipster conversations, in a hip part of the city Flustered in a flutter, forebode and unfulfilled Drowning in a puddle, dangerously distilled Surprising speculation, seek to clearly see Occidental admiration is not owed to me How could a profound love be found in a heart watered down?

Where did my sunlight go? Blue moon rising I couldn’t feel it coming on, no, though it ain’t surprising I fell in love too quick again, she never thought of staying She was in a rock n’ roll band, she only thought of playing Listening to Lucinda, slow dancing in moonlight Looking out my window wondering are you dancing alone tonight Are you dancing alone tonight? Where did my sunlight go? Blue moon rising Holding on too tight again, though it ain’t surprising That I’ll be dancing alone tonight. As you’re hopping along.

Let Go Again 04:07
I was hoping to lose you Let you fade away But like a knock on the door I come running Just been losing myself Never knowing the truth Can’t look to the future when I keep looking back for you Headstrong don’t mean nothing When my heart’s all I hear I don’t know who I am without you Been missing you, my dear You and I in a coma state Lay a lilac down to remember my name Always waiting up for you but nothing seems to change Maybe someday soon I’ll let go again Cold hands, warm heart Washed up on the shore Headed west for the county line but sun doesn’t shine anymore I wouldn’t change for you You shouldn’t change a thing about you Maybe we’ll meet up, in the middle, down the road Chasing the wind we lean into You and I in a coma state Lay a lilac down to remember my name Always waiting up for you but nothing seems to change Maybe someday soon You’ll come back again

This here’s the end To a bitter heart, the lonely dark Found myself a friend One who can’t be named, and without face Pull me inside To the big river wide Dock to the shoreline And bathe in the light A sparrow to tree An orphan homed, a hand to hold Look inward to see What can’t be named and without face Pull us inside To the big river wide Dock to the shoreline Bathe in the light

Lucky Penny 04:41
No money left with the bills past due Offer up a favor, in exchange for food I’ll keep you in my pocket, or I’m bound to lose You’re my lucky penny, baby, I’ve been looking for you Needed your love like a washing machine Showing up dirty but I come out clean I hope you can understand what I mean You’re my lucky penny, baby, and you’re all I need It’s a good thing I walk with my head down Might’ve passed you up if I was looking around Of all the lonely people on this side of town It was a lucky day for me to find you on the ground Yeah, it was a lucky day for me to find you on the ground I’ll pick you up when you let me down Can’t make heads or tails of the love I found Nickel and dime me, I’ll pass the buck on the side street Leave you there, heads up and shining Two months in, when you took my hand Told me that you loved me but I couldn’t understand How you could fall for a penny-pinching man Laid you down and away I ran Out of luck and not a cent to my name Didn’t know my heart could so quickly change I’ll take the buck, yeah, pass on the blame Sorry for the luck that I threw away I’ll pick you up when you let me down Can’t make heads or tails of the love I found Nickel and dime me, I’ll pass the buck on the side street Leave you there, heads up and shining

There’s a twenty mile walk Kingdom come and on the clock Gonna ride down anyway If you ever have a choice You should know by now, on your way downtown, that’s it’s build and bound You won’t be happy when you’re gone You only get one time around the sun I’ve seen the ocean turn to stone Father I don’t see your face in chrome I see the old kid coming home Father I don’t see your face no more Anyway Love is thicker than before Shoulders bent against the bore Gonna ride down anyway If you ever have a choice Take it up with me, ain’t gonna be easy, but we’ll ride on through the night And the daybreak comes and our eyes will see all the polar whipping light Won’t be happy when you’re gone You only get one time around the sun I’ve seen the ocean turn to stone Father I don’t see your face in chrome I see the old kid coming home Father I don’t see your face no more Anyway

Dead Air 03:36
Like a strip of light cutting through the crack in the shade I come alive just before the morning break Try to make sense, get a little wider view If this is everything, than I’ve got nothing to lose Lonely, baby Low down, crazy Wild but never free I keep chasing White lines on pavement Looking for something concrete Think that I just might get myself back to the lake Wash myself clean or try to find another mistake With nothing left to give and even less to take I’ll be singing in the service on Sunday to remember my name Lonely, baby Low down, crazy Wild but never free I keep chasing White lines on pavement Looking for something concrete

She’s fifteen and he’s barely driving a car She’s got his ring and he’s got the keys to her heart It’s just a matter of time They’ll spread their wings and fly Like two sparrows in a hurricane Trying to find their way With a head full of dreams and faith that can move anything They’ve heard its all uphill All they know is how they feel The world says they’ll never make it But love says they will There’s a baby crying And another on the way There’s a wolf at their door, With a big stack of bills they can’t pay The clouds are dark and the wind is high But they can see the other side Like two sparrows in a hurricane Trying to find their way With a head full of dreams and faith that can move anything They’ve heard its all uphill All they know is how they feel The world says they’ll never make it But love says they will She’s eighty-three and he’s barely driving a car She’s got his ring and he’s got the keys to her heart It’s just a matter of time They’ll spread their wings and fly Like two sparrows in a hurricane Trying to find their way With a head full of dreams and faith that can move anything They’ve heard its all uphill All they know is how they feel The world says they’ll never make it But love says they will

Set my hand upon the seat To gesture you “Come next to me” All I wanted was your company Just another pair of eyes To help me examine life And why we never seem satisfied Some take a trip to the Middle-East Brag about their adventurous tendencies To complete strangers they’ll never meet Thought some solitude may help Give me a chance to know myself But I just end up thinking of someone else Please tell me what to do As my rudder’s fallen loose And the wind won’t be picking up soon Too terrified to test the storm Too ambitious to accept the norm Too skeptical and so uninformed To ever really know Which way’s the right way to go Been talking to that old Scarecrow (Spoken Word) For your sake I made myself presentable No more blades beneath my tongue No more daggers behind my eyes No more pain disguised as armor No more reason to keep from crying Some days I wonder how you saw my surrender Could you tell I was running away from something Is that why you opened the door Did you feel more like an alter than a partner Should I have held back just a little bit more For my sake, I no longer seek religion, or refuge, or last resort I make myself presentable I arrive at my own door Past a church on a motorbike Boarded up like the Anti-Christ Had done his work and was satisfied Had to stop to take a breath Tip my hat to this holy death Payed my respects and then I left It all felt like a chapter closed No more praying for a golden road Just some wind will do to guide me home

Landlocked 04:56
Now there’s a sign hanging in my window And it reads “For Rent- information call Sam Ko” Landlord abroad and the man to pay I’m leaving you, Lady, for the coast of LA I heard the road, it was calling my name My heart in yours, falling like a stone The same one you kicked when we were walking alone I heard your call and I replied As loud as I could while I was waving goodbye They saw us weeping while we’re waving goodbye Landlocked, love corrupt Let the river behind keep lifting me up Feeling so low sitting in the Highland Call it my home but I’m still missing my old friends I heard that milk and honey flow free Still waiting for callbacks from CTB I’m missing you darling but I’m chasing my dreams Landlocked, love corrupt Let the river behind keep lifting us up

about

Edwin Los Angeles, California

Jacob and Matthew Boll began recording the songs for West in the beginning of 2020. Every song from the record was recorded remotely, Matthew from the wilderness of Michigan and Jacob from sunny L.A. What started as a small 'acoustic' project quickly expanded as their friends and collaborators joined them from their own homes, recording over the internet, to contribute to the album. ... more
